Historic Note Regarding the Ship

In 1766, Sailing Master James Cook commanded the small Massachusetts-built schooner Sally, which the Royal Navy had purchased for his use on the Newfoundland survey. The Sally was later renamed the Grenville. Sir Joseph Banks, then a young naturalist on the scene, observed the ship:

I take this opportunity of setting down the dimensions of a schooner Boat we had with us for a tender as it appears to me the most rational Plan of a Pleasure boat I have met with our People all agreeing that when her hatches were shut down it was scarcely in the power of wind or water to sink she swimming upon the surface like a corked bottle her schooner sails also allowing her to be work’d by fewer hands than any other Kind she had 42 feet Keel 12 feet Beam & was 5 ½ feet Deep Pink stern decked flush fore and aft...She carried Mainsail Foresail Fore stay sail & Gib with a square sail to go before the wind.

Like the Sally, her replica La Revenante was built by hand in Massachusetts in the 1960s, and then extensively restored and refitted between 2006 and 2010. The vessel is operated under her 18th Century schooner rig, supplemented by long sweeps to move her in calm waters. Nonetheless it is equipped with an auxiliary diesel that provides for a cruising radius of several hundred miles under power. She is equipped with VHF radio, a GPS/SatNav navigational suite, 24-mile radar, depth sounder, 10-man liferaft and PFDs in accordance with CCG/USCG and SOLAS regulations, and carries a longboat equipped with oars and a sail rig. The ship is fitted with two or more 2-pounder replica ship’s guns as well as swivel guns, all firing blank black powder charges, and also carried a full Flag Locker of 18th Century and modern ensigns, pennants, and flags. Deck fittings are traditional to the 18th Century with modern safety gear hidden under historical coverings. The schooner is sailed at all times by a core crew and specially-selected volunteers wearing museum-quality replica seamen’s clothing of the 18th Century. In the evenings, candle lanterns and other traditional fittings give the vessel the warm atmosphere of a vanished era for visitor and crew alike.

With on-deck and below stowage in addition to spartan but working crew accommodation, La Revenante has proven to be an ideal expedition ship for research into aspects of marine biology, history, ecology, and history-based tourism. It represents Cook’s small survey schooner Grenville with efficiency and accuracy, while imparting a true air and feel of the mid-18th Century.
